Dowry - reflections in textile / «Посаг - роздуми у текстилі» | Natalya Hrytsak

$220.00

A dowry is what you take with you into a new life - some things you have collected yourself, others have been given to you for your future. A dowry is given with love and symbolizes new beginnings, yet it also represents a loss of something that was and never will be again - death and rebirth.

In this piece, Hrytsak uses both new and natural fibers and techniques that she learned from her grandmother, mother and embroidery masters from Kosiv ( a town in Ukraine). Her work raises questions such as What gifts have I received? What should I do with them? What gifts can I give?

Six different hand embroidery techniques were employed to create this piece including: chain stitch (ретязь), satin stitch (гладь), running stitch (протяганка), rococo stitch (рококо), stem stitch (стебловий), blanket stitch (плахтовий), one-sided satin stitch (одностороння)

MATERIALS
Stretched canvas, cotton, linen, wool, wooden beads, plastic bags

DIMENSIONS
27.5 x 27.5 inches

DATE OF CREATION
2020
